The NHS Health Check is a national programme that aims to prevent vascular disease including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and dementia.

What is the NHS Health Check?
Patients between the ages of 40 and 74, who have not already been diagnosed with one of these conditions may have a free Health Check every five years to assess their risk of developing one or more of the conditions. They are then given advice and support to help them reduce or manage that risk.
What happens at the Health Check?
The Health Check appointment should take about 20 to 30 minutes.
You will be asked some simple questions about your family history and any medications you are taking. Your height, weight, age, sex and ethnicity will be recorded and you will have your blood pressure checked and a simple blood test to check your cholesterol and sugar levels.
Following the check, you will receive free personalised lifestyle advice about what you can do to stay healthy and reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, for example making changes to your diet or becoming more active.
How do I get a Health Check?
You are eligible for a free NHS Health Check if:
- You are registered with a Somerset GP or resident in Somerset
- You are not being treated by your GP for an existing diagnosed vascular condition
- You are aged between 40 and 74
- You have not had an NHS Health Check in the last five years.
