In recent weeks, demand for testing has risen rapidly across the country, with much of the new demand coming from those without coronavirus symptoms.
Currently, testing for Covid-19 is strictly reserved for any person who displays one or more of the following symptoms:
- High temperature
- New and persistent cough
- Loss of, or a change to taste and/or smell
Any person not displaying these symptoms should not request a test, as doing so could mean somebody with symptoms is unable to receive their essential test in a timely manner.
If you are showing symptoms of Covid-19 you can request a coronavirus test online, or call 119.
You cannot book a test via the NHS111 system, or in person at your GP practice, pharmacy or hospital.

Track and Trace
NHS Test and Trace:
- ensures that anyone who develops symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) can quickly be tested to find out if they have the virus, and also includes targeted asymptomatic testing of NHS and social care staff and care home residents
- helps trace close recent contacts of anyone who tests positive for coronavirus and, if necessary, notifies them that they must self-isolate at home to help stop the spread of the virus.
