NHS Somerset is thrilled to announce that our armed forces support initiative has been highly commended at the HSJ Awards, one of the UK’s most prestigious celebrations of healthcare excellence.
This accolade recognises the innovative approach to supporting Somerset’s Armed Forces community in partnership with outstanding organisations across the county.
The commendation highlights the success of our Armed Forces Strategic Forum and NHS funded Armed Forces Link Workers, who deliver tailored care to a community that represents 9% of Somerset’s population.
Tackling Barriers to Care
NHS Somerset’s initiative was designed to address long-standing challenges such as siloed working and a lack of awareness of available services, which often left those in the Armed Forces community struggling to access the support they needed. By fostering collaboration with already well-established voluntary sector and charity organisations, statutory agencies and Armed Forces welfare support charities, the organisation has created a cohesive, wraparound service to ensure no one in the Armed Forces community is left without help.
At the heart of the initiative are the Armed Forces Hubs, developed in collaboration with ARK at Egwood and Arc in Taunton. These hubs, staffed by dedicated Armed Forces Link Workers, provide bespoke advice, guidance, and referrals to address a wide range of needs, including mental health support, family wellbeing, housing, financial assistance and specialist PTSD care.
Building Strong Partnerships
NHS Somerset’s partnerships with ARK at Egwood and Arc demonstrate the power of collaboration. ARK provides therapeutic outdoor experiences, whilst Arc delivers housing and advice services, significantly extending the reach and effectiveness of the Armed Forces Hubs.
Additionally, NHS Somerset has partnered with GP practices to achieve RCGP Veteran Friendly accreditation, with 100% of practices accredited.
National Recognition and Future Plans
NHS Somerset’s work has drawn attention from national leaders, including a visit from NHS England CEO Amanda Pritchard, who described the initiative as “inspirational” and a model for improving provision for the Armed Forces community across the country.
NHS Somerset remains steadfast in its mission to drive forwards its Armed Forces support. This recognition at the HSJ Awards reinforces the impact of its work and underscores the importance of continued innovation and collaboration for the benefit of veterans, serving personnel, reservists and their families.
