NHS Somerset update on progress to reopening Yeovil maternity and neonatal services

NHS Somerset has today issued an update following the latest three‑monthly review meeting with Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, confirming the trust are making continued progress toward the planned reopening of maternity and neonatal services at Yeovil District Hospital (YDH) on 21 April 2026.

The Trust reported significant improvements in staffing, a key requirement for safely restoring services. This includes the successful recruitment of five paediatricians, with three already in post, a fourth joining in March, and the final paediatrician due to start in summer 2026. Recruitment of midwives and specialist neonatal nurses has also progressed positively, strengthening the clinical workforce ahead of reopening.

The Trust acknowledged that resources remain stretched across maternity services, and additional support is being deployed to maintain progress. They also confirmed that teams from Yeovil District Hospital continue to work closely with those at Dorset County Hospital and Musgrove Park Hospital to ensure all three sites are ready for the reopening, and that service users remain well supported. NHS Somerset has also undertaken a system‑wide dynamic risk assessment, ensuring that risks both within and beyond Somerset are fully considered.

NHS Somerset confirmed that preparations remain on track and that the planned reopening date of midday on the 21 April 2026 is unchanged. There are a number of further steps the Trust needs to take before safely reopening and we will continue to monitor their progress over the coming weeks.

A spokesperson for NHS Somerset said: “We are encouraged by the continued progress made by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust and the strong commitment to ensuring that maternity and neonatal services at Yeovil reopen safely. Recruitment, safety improvements, and system‑wide planning are all moving in the right direction, and we remain focused on supporting the Trust to deliver a safe and sustainable service for families.”

NHS Somerset will continue to provide updates as preparations progress.
