We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of baby Brendon Staddon and our thoughts remain with all those affected by this devastating case.
The conclusion of the criminal trial has brought to light the appalling harm inflicted on Brendon while he was a patient in the Special Care Baby Unit at Yeovil District Hospital. We acknowledge the distress this has caused to the public, to healthcare professionals involved in his care, and to the wider community.
NHS Somerset Integrated Care Board is fully engaged in the Child Safeguarding Practice Review commissioned by the Somerset Safeguarding Children Partnership. This independent review is examining the circumstances surrounding Brendon’s death, including the actions of all agencies involved, to identify any lessons that must be learned.
Our priority is to ensure that every child in Somerset is protected from harm. We are committed to working with our partners across health, social care, and the wider safeguarding system to strengthen our collective response and prevent such a tragedy from ever happening again.
We will act on the findings of the review when it concludes later this year and ensure that any necessary changes to improve the services we commission are implemented swiftly and effectively.
