Somerset Research and Innovation
Research and innovation are two ways in which we can improve and develop health and care services in Somerset. Partners across Somerset are working together to provide more opportunities to take part in research.
Somerset Research and Innovation
We want all people of all ages who live and work in Somerset to live healthy and fulfilling lives. We want people to live well for longer, and for Somerset to be a fantastic place to raise families, create employment, and support one another to be the best they can be. You can find more about this ambition and plan Our Somerset Strategy and Joint Forward Plan - Our Somerset.
Research
Research is a systematic investigation aimed at answering specific questions and creating new knowledge and evidence through data collection, reviews, and analysis. It leads to novel insights and contributes to the body of knowledge and intellectual property.
We do many different types of research in Somerset, through our hospitals, community services, General Practice surgeries, Local Authority or our Voluntary (VCFSE) organisations. This could include national studies that test new medicines or technology, reviews to see how services are working trials of new treatments or questionnaires on how certain conditions or treatments impact you. Patients help us understand how well treatments are working and what could be better. The opinions of their family members and carers are also very important and help us see the full picture.
Innovation
Innovation is the process of applying knowledge to generate and implement original ideas, leading to significant improvements and new solutions in delivering services. It involves taking new approaches and translating ideas into practical, impactful applications.
Why take part in Research?
Taking part in health or care research offers many benefits, both for individuals and the wider community. Participants may gain early access to new treatments or technologies and often receive closer monitoring and care, which can lead to better health outcomes. Many people also find that being involved in research helps them better understand their own health or condition.
By contributing to research, individuals play an important role in improving healthcare for everyone. Their involvement helps develop new treatments, shape better services, and improve future care. Many participants say they feel a strong sense of purpose, knowing they are helping others. Families and carers can also benefit, gaining support and a deeper understanding of the condition being studied. Research-active healthcare settings are often linked with higher quality care, so taking part can make a meaningful difference on many levels.
