Bernie Marden, Chief Medical Officer at NHS Somerset says: “Cold weather and seasonal infections can be seriously bad for your health. That’s why it’s important to look after yourself and your family, especially during the winter. Somerset has a wide range of services to help everyone stay fit and healthy.
“Winter is often a challenging time for the NHS, particularly over the festive season when services become busier and are more limited over the bank holiday period.
“We’ve put together a handy guide on our website to help you access services to look after your health in Somerset over the festive season. Visit https://nhssomerset.nhs.uk/my-health/winter-2023/”
“Regardless of any strike action taking place, it’s really important that patients who need urgent medical care continue to come forward as normal, especially in emergency and life-threatening cases – when someone is seriously ill or injured, or their life is at risk”.
Strike action 20 – 23 December
Ahead of the Christmas bank holidays, we also have strikes taking place. The British Medical Association (BMA) and Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association (HCSA) have announced junior doctors and dental trainees will take strike action from 0700 on Wednesday 20 December until 0700 on Saturday 23 December.
This will affect services at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. Teams across the trust are working together to ensure that it can continue to provide urgent and emergency care for all patients, and to keep as many services running as possible.
It’s likely for non-urgent cases there will be longer waiting times in the Emergency Department.
If the Trust needs to change any planned appointments it will try to give you as much notice as possible, but on occasion, may need to make some last-minute changes to planned procedures or appointments.
If you have an appointment, please attend as planned. Please don’t call to check if your appointment is going ahead. If your appointment is affected by industrial action, your clinic will contact you directly.
Anyone with a non-urgent care need should first seek help from NHS 111, before attending our hospital sites.
Further information on NHS services, opening hours and waiting times can also be found by downloading the NHS Quicker App.
You can find more information about looking after your health this winter on NHS Somerset website.
